Projects

Project title Ferries with Tele ECG at the Baltic Sea
Summary The TT- Line, one of the largest shipping companies in the Baltic Sea area, Segeberger Kliniken GmbH, Germany, and the Hospital Hässleholm, Sweden, have agreed on a cooperative venture.
The TT-Line equipped their six ferries with devices that permit to transmit the ECG signals through the telephone and trained their personnel extensively. If necessary, crew members can record and transmit an ECG by telephone via a multilingual server in Bad Segeberg, Germany, to one of both heart centres connected to the ‘eHealth for Regions network’. Cardiologists from the hospitals are available day and night. They can offer further advice for treatment after diagnosis.

Objectives
  • A better healthcare support for travelling citizens
  • To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of transnational Tele ECG
  • To reduce the time from symptoms to treatment.
  • To standardise the remote diagnostic and follow up transnationally
E-Health application used in a transnational context The multilingual server and the transnational network allow safe remote diagnosis in critical heart care situation. A crew members can record and transmit an ECG by telephone via a multilingual server in Bad Segeberg, Germany, to one of both heart centres connected to the ‘eHealth for Regions network’ in Bad Segeberg, Germany, or Hässleholm, Sweden.
Benefit of transnational approach The Swedish and German partners provide transnational medical services to the ferry line based on common standards and joint use of technical infrastructure
Achieved
Activities
  • Training of the ship crew in applying the Tele ECG
  • Implement a scheduled test plan
  • Transmisson of Tele ECGs from the ferry to the heart centers followed by medical recommendations
  • Analysis of the deviation and implement corrective actions
Output
  • Trained staff at the ferries
  • Tele ECG connection established and in use
  • Medical professionals at heart centers in Hässleholm, Sweden, and Segeberg, Germany available
Results and indicators Result: five-minute turnaround time from first call to diagnosis.
Indicator: nine out of ten transmissions should be readable by a cardiologist.
